The adaptation was written by J. Comyns Carr and was produced by Henry Irving, starring Irving and Ellen Terry. The music was composed by Arthur Sullivan and the sets, costume and artwork by Pre-Raphaelite artist and designer Sir Edward Burne-Jones. The production was an incredible success and ran for over 100 performances, and also toured North America.

Print showing a scene from a production of King Arthur, at the Lyceum Theatre, January 12th 1895. The scene depicts King Arthur, played by Henry Irving raising a sword towards Sir Lancelot, played by Johnston Forbes-Robertson, who is kneeling in chain and plate armour with his arms apart. Guinevere, played by Ellen Terry, is kneeling by Arthur reaching up towards him. In the background is Elaine, played by Lena Ashwell, laying dead in a white bed. The scene is described at the bottom of the print, with Lancelot saying 'Strike on! Strike on! I say, For death is all I crave'.
