Moule II

Drawing
2005 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The sculptor Edward Allington often uses sheets from old ledgers as drawing paper. Here the drawn forms - two halves of a mould and a cast form - are given a powerful sense of three-dimensional presence with hatching and deep shadows. However, the columns of figures and other mundane details on the ledger paper call attention to the illusion of pictorial depth.

Drawing, Moule II by Edward Allington, ink and 19th century ruled paper, 2005
Physical description
Drawing on a sheet of ruled paper taken from a nineteenth-century ledger, headed 'Davy Place, Norwich' and dated 1884. The drawing, covering the original writing on the sheet, shows two standing forms, the two halves of a mould. At the bottom of the sheet lies a curving, tubular form ending in a spiral, which has presumably been cast from the mould. These three objects are strongly modelled and cast deep shadows. There is a red stamp in the bottom right-hand corner with the letters E.T.A.
