Cheomjang 160604

Vase
2016 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Yun makes vibrantly coloured porcelain vessels with spiky surfaces reminiscent of sea urchins. Despite the contemporary appearance of his work, the technique he uses derives from the historical practice associated with buncheong wares of brushing multiple layers of white slip on to a contrastingly darker stoneware body. Yun experiments with the viscosity of the slip he uses and also adds particles of acrylic, metal or silk to provide texture and body. By varying the pressure and the direction of brushing, Yun generates droplets that further applications of slip turn into spikes.
