1521 Desiderius Erasmus (1466-1536)
From 1517, Erasmus undertook a new Latin ‘translation’ of the New Testament from the original Greek text, in the form of paraphrases. He collaborated closely with Basel printer Johann Froben, who published this volume. Famed for typographical excellence, Froben also commissioned the best artists to decorate his books, such as Hans Holbein the younger, himself a friend of Erasmus.
Switzerland, Basel
