Object history note

This dress was worn by Mrs. Thatcher, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, in a widely published photograph of her with the Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi in New Delhi in November 1983. With the bow at the neck, it is a strong example of the Prime Minister's early style whilst in office, before she developed her signature power suit look. The dress was custom-made for Thatcher by her personal dressmaker, Daphne Scrimgeour.
