Marks and inscriptions
'Naini Tal, Kumaon, N. W. Provinces, India. Painted soon after its discovery by Barron - assistant in Resa Sugar Works, Shahjehanpur, under Captn Beckett, H. M. E. I. S. The station was soon after started by J. Hallet Batten, B. C. S., Commnr of Kumaon - son-in-law of Captn Beckett.' (written on back of painting, in frame)

Information in the Acquisition Register, "On the back of the frame is the following note: "Naini Tal, Kumaon, N.W. Provinces, India. Painted soon after its discovery by Mr. Barron- assistant in Resa Sugar Works, Shahjehanpur, under Captain Beckett, H.M., E.I.S. The station was soon after started by J. Hallet Batten, B.C.S., Commander of Kumaon- son-in-law of Capatain Beckett".

Given by H.G. Batten, Esq., "Almore", 17 Woodvale, Forest Hill, S.E. 23. This acquisition information reflects that found in the Museum records (Asia Department registers and/or Central Inventory) as part of a 2023 provenance research project.
