Robert Grindley came to India in 1803 as an army officer and held various posts which enabled him to travel around western India. This painting has a certain warmth and charm and is typical of his romantic sensibility. He later published a book entitled 'Scenery, Costumes and Architecture, chiefly on the Western side of India' which is ranked among the finest colour-plate volumes depicting views of India ever produced.

Grindlay travelled widely in western India and this painting is typical of his romantic sensibility. Despite his technical limitations in oil painting, there is nevertheless a certain warmth and charm to his paintings.
