Brief description
Illuminated manuscript; binding. Incomplete book of hours, Southern Low Countries, c. 1520-1530, illuminated in the style of Simon Bening (c. 1483-1561)
Layout: single columns of 17 lines.
Script: Written in a large gothic rotunda. Latin.
Decoration: 2 full-page miniatures, each facing a full-page historiated border and a large illuminated initial D; 5 smaller miniatures of saints within full-page borders of flowers, fruit, leaves, insects, birds and animals; illuminated initials throughout on grounds of red, blue and green. Apart from the possible strengthening of the blue, white and red on david's garments in the first miniature the decoration is in fine condition and of high quality, possibly by Simon Bening.
Binding: 17th century Amsterdam binding of red morocco gilt with characteristic bird-roll outer border, large central gilt panel enclosing a lozenge centrepiece, g.e. ; modern cloth case.
