Scene with mountains, lake and jetty

Watercolour
ca. 1890-1940 (painted)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

After studying at Westminster School of Art, Warwick Goble began a career as an illustrator. He contributed to many magazines, and joined the staff of the Pall Mall Gazette and later the Westminster Gazette. This was the 'Golden age of illustration' of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and Goble's delicate watercolour technique was ideal for the large colour plates required for the lavishly illustrated gift books produced at this time. As a watercolour painter Goble exhibited widely, including at the Royal Academy from 1893. This atmospheric watercolour of a lake surrounded by mountains reflects the powerful influence of Oriental art on Goble's work.
