Two sketches of a mouse in an egg-cup

Drawing
ca.1897 (drawn)
Artist/Maker

Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) is one of the world's best-loved children's authors and illustrators. She wrote the majority of the twenty-three Original Peter Rabbit Books between 1901 and 1913. The Tale of Peter Rabbit (Frederick Warne, 1902) is her most famous and best-loved tale.

A version of this composition also appears in Potter’s manuscript for ‘Ninny Nanny Netticoat’, a rhyme and illustration first conceived in 1897 that was redrawn for Cecily Parsley’s Nursery Rhymes (published 1922). The finished illustration in Cecily Parsley’s Nursery Rhymes, however, does not include a mouse in an egg-cup.

The finished verse goes:

Ninny Nanny Netticoat,
In a white petticoat,
With a red nose, -
The longer she stands,
The shorter she grows.
