Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) is one of the world's best-loved children's authors and illustrators. She wrote the majority of the twenty-three Original Peter Rabbit Books between 1901 and 1913. The Tale of Peter Rabbit (Frederick Warne, 1902) is her most famous and best-loved tale.

Beatrix Potter made many imaginary drawings before she published her books. This sheet, completed in pen and ink on tracing paper, is a tracing she made of a watercolour and pen-and-ink drawing entitled 'Dicky's Cake Dance'. The watercolour was made on 20 December 1900. Potter gave the original drawing away - it was a fourth birthday present for her cousin, Richard Mallet, grandson of Sir Henry Roscoe - so made the tracing for herself.

Physical description

A tracing or design executed on tracing paper: there is a large cake with candles in the centre, around which a teapot, tea cups, jugs, spoons and other items of crockery and cutlery dance; with holly leaves in the foreground.
