Baron Denon instructing Mrs Cheney in the technique of polyautography

Print
ca.1811 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This print, showing an amateur female printmaker being instructed in lithography, situates what was at the time a new technique in a different social context from that with which it is usually associated. Little is known about the artist, Harriett Cheney, although there exist some rare etchings made by her between 1810 and about 1822. This may have been the only lithograph she made.

Lithography is a print process in which the artist draws with a greasy chalk or crayon directly onto the surface of a stone. The surface is next prepared, moistened and inked; the greasy printing ink adheres to the design, which is then printed onto a sheet of paper.
