Object history
The T-shirt was bought in London in 1990 and bears a gold-foil portrait of 'Daddae' (Philip Harvey) created by Derek Yates in 1986. This portrait serves as the logo of the music group Soul II Soul, for whom Daddae was a founding member in 1988. The group were very experimental, starting out as a sound system where DJs played music simultaneously with live music, and became known for their distinctive style of clothing and "funki dred" hairstyles. As illustrated on the shirt, a funki dred comprised of shaved back and sides, and dreadlocked hair on top, and became a signature style for the members of Soul II Soul. This was described as incorporating "the roots of reggae culture and the style of the urban dance scene." This shirt was issued at the height of Soul II Soul's popularity.
