Norwich Bull Feast or Glory and Gluttony

Print
1813 (etched)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Thomas Rowlandson was one of the most talented and original draughtsmen of his generation. This scene represents frenzied eating and drinking, taking place around a roasted bull, in the marketplace in Norwich. At this date Norwich was one of the largest cities in Britain. The cause of all this excess were the celebrations for victory at Leipzig over Napoleon in the "Battle of the Nations" on 16-18 October 1813. News of the victory reached London on the 2nd of November and this print was first published twenty days later. An effigy of Napoleon is being paraded on a pole in the background, on the left.
