Place of origin |
John Bull, the archetypal Englishman, is shown taking his wife and children out for some fresh air on a velocipede. Velocipedes came in two or three wheeled form. This three wheeled version is the forerunner of the modern tricycle but was propelled not by pedalling but by light touches on the ground with the feet by the person on the front.
The family is shown in Bushey Park to the west of London, near Hampton Court Palace. They are shown going round a large pond with a statue of the goddess Diana in the middle. The park and the pond with its statue still exist today, and are still a beautiful sight when out for a Sunday drive.
