Rottmann & Co. established a factory in Yokohama, Japan in the early 1880s. The workshop mostly produced imitation embossed leather wallpapers, a style that copied ornate and gilded leather wall-hangings that were fashionable in the late 19th century. These photographs trace this labour-intensive process, including the intricate relief work on the paper. While the wallpapers were often manufactured in Japan, they were largely exported to a European market.(May 2023)
