Place of origin

Costume designed by Ali Pretty in 1999 for Mama D’Lo in Carnevale Burlesque, for Luton's Children's Carnival in 2000.

The Carnivale Burlesque band depicts the history of Carnival from the 17th Century to present day and included designes inspired by celebrations and foklore from around the world. Mama D'lo is the queen costume of the band, and depicts the Trinidadian folkloric character, mother of the water. The design was inspired by Avril Turner's illustration that carved a female face onto the tail of an anaconda.

The costume was a puppet for approximately ten performers, and the body was made from a series of foam rings covered in silk, allowing for movement. The performers were costumed in boiler suits, each with a silk tail wrapped around their bodies.
