Testimonial, handwritten in French, celebrating the actress Alice Delysia and her performances for the troops during World War II, ca. 1944

French actress and singer Alice Delysia (1889-1979) first appeared on the London stage in 1914 and became a star of West End revues and musical plays. During World War II she joined ENSA, the Entertainments National Service Association, and toured in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.

This testimonial reads:

Alice Delysia followed the Allied troops to the theatre of the front on 19 May 1941, to Egypt, Palestine, Syria, Iraq, Persia, Transjordan and the Western Desert until El Alamein, 23 December 1943. Finallly on 5 August 1944, France, Normandy, Belgium.

Alice Delysia is the first woman to set foot on German soil with the Allied troops. This incomparable artist is beloved by all the brave soldiers. She brings them the comforts of her smile and songs. Long live France, Long live England, Long live Belgium!
