Furnishing Fabric

ca. 1880 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The French textile industry was dealt a heavy blow by the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871 which resulted in the loss of the provinces of Alsace and Lorraine and with them, France's main source of coal and iron, her advanced dye works, main textile printers and her industrial leaders. The production of woven silks was, however, maintained despite many difficulties. The market for luxury furnishings gradually increased, with texture and dramatic effect being very important. Although the prevailing style for these furnishings was that of the 18th century, this example is based on late 16th century designs.
