Object history
Purchased, 1980

Historical significance: A painter of abstract and near-abstract figure and landscape pictures, Peter Kinley (1926-1988) was born in Vienna, and came to England as a refugee in the late 1930s. After spending several years in the Army he studied at Dusseldorf Academy 1948-9, then at St Martin's School of Art, 1949-53. He first exhibited with Young Contemporaries in 1951, and later went on to show widely in the UK.

Kinley painted a number of comparable figure subjects in 1957, probably the date of this work. At this time he often used a palette knife to apply oil paint in flat planes, a technique which is clearly visible here.
