Object history | This watercolour was exhibited at the Society of Painters in Water-Colours (SPWC) [later known fondly as the Old Watercolour Society). The SPWC exhibitions were successful but notoriously dominated by landscapes. Joshua Cristall stood out for his watercolours of large dignified figures, including this work. But while his technique was admired, some critics felt it was wasted on ‘low’ subjects. |
