Historical context
This is the original sketch for the image in The Arabian Nights, E.W. Lane trans., edn. pub. by Gibbings and Co., 1896, Vol.5, Ch.XXIII, facing p.2. During the 1890s Brangwyn worked as an illustrator for magazines such as The Graphic and for books such as Gibbings' new edition of The Arabian Nights. Another example from the same series is in the VAM, DPD (E.348-1912).
