Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) is one of the world's best-loved children's authors and illustrators. She wrote the majority of the twenty-three Original Peter Rabbit Books between 1901 and 1913. The Tale of Peter Rabbit (Frederick Warne, 1902) is her most famous and best-loved tale.
This pen and ink study landscape study relates to a print entitled ‘Seven Leas Lane’, dated October 1904; for an example, see museum no. BP.236(b). It is one of a pair of line block prints made by Edmund Evans Ltd. of Beatrix Potter landscape designs in 1904. The other, also represented in the collection, is entitled ‘Farm-house at Brookthorpe, Glos.’ Edmund Evans Ltd. printed Potter’s illustrations for the Peter Rabbit books published by Frederick Warne, but the company also took on smaller jobs for her, such as the printing of leaflets.
