Historical context
Another, larger version of the same subject, titled Capt. Sir Richard F. Burton KCMG FRGS maitre d'armes France 15th December 1852 and dated Trieste 1883 is at the Orleans House Gallery, Twickenham, where there is further material relating to Letchford and the Burtons. SD.577 may be a study for the Orleans House Gallery version (No.554).
