Gallery label | During the 19th century, the small town of Olevano near Rome was home to a thriving community of artists from across Europe. James Baker Pyne painted this dramatic scene during one of his visits in the 1850s. His theatrical use of colour demonstrates how his work was influenced by the renowned painter J.M.W. Turner, and exemplifies Pyne’s experiments with contrasting light effects.(04/2021) |
