For much of his career, Louis-Maurice Boutet de Monvel (1851-1912) worked as an illustrator of children's literature, so it comes as no suprise that when he turned his hand to posters he frequently incorporated children into his compositions, as seen in this poster advertising Docteur Pierre toothpaste.

Like many of his contemporaries, Boutet de Monvel subscribed to the artistic style, Japonisme, a European interpretation of Japanese design sources. Here the Japonisme aesthetic comes through in the highly figured wallpaper, which suggests Japanese cherry blossoms.

Physical description

Against the backdrop of highly figured wallpaper, a young girl in a red dress stands next to a washstand, on which have been placed a bowl and jug. In one hand the girl holds a toothbrush and in the other a bar of the toothpaste advertised in the poster's text.
