This composition is made up of many different scenes taking place in and around a household during the Durga Puja festival. The viewer enters the picture plane from a high view point and is encouraged to explore the various scenes.
The main focal point is in the bottom right hand quarter of the painting where there is a large-scale clay image of the goddess Durga killing the demon Mahishasura. A priest is seated in front of the Durga performing a ceremony, and in the foreground there are people bringing offerings and a musician playing a dhol drum.
There are a variety of other scenes taking place in the household; in the top right hand corner a group of women are resting, one is having her hair combed, vegetables are being prepared on the roof, men sit and talk, beside them a woman makes a flower garland, a boy climbs a ladder, two women stand on the balcony, and there are many doorways through which people are seen entering and leaving.
