This illustration was published in The Sunday Times in the Arts section on 26th April 1992. It provides a witty comment on a contemporary aspect of the recession, which had had an impact on both the art trade and museums.

Chris Burke (born 1955) is one of the most successful contemporary British illustrators whose work has been a regular feature in such publications as The Listener, The Radio Times, You Magazine and most notably The Sunday Times for which he produces a weekly drawing.

Physical description

This cartoon drawing shows a man wearing white vest, grey overall jacket and blue trousers, and sporting a large beer belly, carrying away a gilt frame. He has a cigarette hanging out of his mouth and wears white trainers. Behind him is a line drawing with grey wash showing an art gallery shop window with closing down sign and cardboard boxes visible. There is no picture in the frame, so the man appears to make the image, except that his trainers show from underneath the frame. The image is signed and dated at the bottom right in inks of various colours.
