Physical description
Watercolour and bodycolour over pencil on card. Designed for the character Grand Duke Rudolph in Act I. He is wearing a long blue and grey spotted coat with gold-coloured trim, matching waistcoat, white shirt with white cravat, grey breeches, white tights, black shoes, a walking stick, and a black tricorn hat with gold-coloured trim.

On the reverse is a sketch by W.S. Gilbert reflecting his preference for the costume for this character. His sketch reflects a more military feel.

General effect of extreme seediness relieved by / numerous & brilliant decoration.' (Written in ink on the reverse by W.S. Gilbert.)
