Chest on stand, the front of chest and stand engraved with a design emphasised with black paste. The design on the chest shows 3 large panels (a rampant lion on either side of a central pair of confronting dragons(?) below arches, with a border of stem and alternating flowers and spiral buds(?). The design on the stand shows fleshy leaves symmetrically arranged either side of a heart(?) motif. The chest sits 2.5cm into a rebate in the stand and is now fixed into the stand with nails, although it appears that the chest was originally pegged into the stand. The stand has been cut down of its feet. The lid is held on two later strap hinges, but two original ring hinges remain. At each end an iron bale handle on a heart-shaped plate has been nailed in place.

The interior is fitted at the right end with a lidded till, the edges of the till with nulling. The upper edges of the front, back and side boards have been punched with a repeating pattern of 3 rosettes linked by swags. It is lined with modern cream paper (degrading) over an earlier 19th or 20c floral paper. Fitted with an internal lock.

Construction
The chest with mitred dovetails, using a distinctive pattern of dovetails (more plan at the rear corners). The lid consists of four boards, to which are nailed 3 edge battens along the ends and front. The right side is formed from one plank, the front and left side from 2 planks. The back consists of 2 boards, with visible scrub planing. The 'engraving' of the design (with a V shape chisel) is relatively crude c2.5mm wide, with a black mastic consisting of 88% beeswax

Modifications
The stand cut down. The handles added and lock/plate replaced. With later paper linings. The lid with two added reinforcing battens on its underside. Numerous patches in the chest lid, and on the top edge of the chest back, and stand.
