Long johns The Wolsey company originated from a hosiery business established in 1755. Wolsey began to sell underwear and knitwear in the early 1900s. Garments in Wolsey's archive inspired the design of this vest and long johns. The term 'long john' was coined in the American army during the Second World War. It may refer to the champion boxer John L. Sullivan (1858-1918).
