Crespin was a key figure in the London community of Huguenot goldsmiths. He had many aristocratic clients, including the Duke of Portland. The portrait shows Crespin's status. He appears as an artist craftsman, with sleeves rolled up and a cap indicating that he is a master. The elaborate late Baroque vase would have been admired for its workmanship and French-influenced design.
