Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) is one of the world's best-loved children's authors and illustrators. She wrote the majority of the twenty-three Original Peter Rabbit Books between 1901 and 1913. The Tale of Peter Rabbit (Frederick Warne, 1902) is her most famous and best-loved tale.
Following her purchase of Hill Top in the Lake District in 1905 Beatrix Potter made many studies of the Lakeland landscape in all seasons. This small pencil and wash study shows a clearing within a woodland, perhaps near Hill Top, covered with snow in January 1911. Potter enjoyed sketching outdoors and thought the Lakeland landscape 'even more impressive in mist and snow'.
