Theatre Costume

Dance Costume
1932 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Costume for Bronislava Nijinska as the Hostess in the 1932 reconstruction of Les Biches for Nijinska’s Théâtre de la danse. Original production designed by Marie Laurencin for Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes 1924. (Laurencin is also credited with designing this revival).
This three-part costume was inspired by the original design, but up-dated (indeed, even during the ballet’s performances with Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes this costume was remodelled by Chanel for Felia Doubrovska). A number of changes to the costumes were introduced for Nijinska’s company, many of which were then used by the Markova-Dolin Company.
