The sitter's hair is powdered and curled and tied back in a black bow; he wears a white cravat with frills and a brown coat edged with gold brocade.

Object history
This painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy, ‘European Masters of the 18th century’. 1954-5 (No.19) as attributed to Allan Ramsay. According to the catalogue of the exhibition, an attribution to Pompeo Batoni has also been suggested. Reproduced in the Illustrated London News, 15 January 1955. This painting is in a contemporary English carved frame.
