Abraham Ragueneau (Raguineau) was born in London in 1623. Very little is known about him but he was active as a painter in The Hague, 's-Hertogenbosch, Leiden and Zierikzee in the Dutch Republic, now the Netherlands. Signed by the artist and dated 1663, Ragueneau's whereabouts that year is unknown but by 1664, he was working in The Hague. It is possible that this portrait was painted there.

  • Portrait of a Man 1663 The fashionable all-black outfit, highlighted by a beautifully laundered lace and linen collar, leaves no doubt about the high status of this young man. He also wears his hair fashionably long. In 1645 a minister in Dordrecht preached against men growing their hair to this length, arguing that it was vain and frivolous and made them look like prostitutes. Historical context
This painting shows a gentleman dressed in black as fashion required in Holland during mid 17th century. The placement of the sitter in a three-quarter pose to the left suggests that it may have been originally provided with a pendant.
