Object history
This is part of a group of early 2010s menswear donated to the V&A by Charlie Porter, one of the most influential British menswear fashion journalists of the early 21st century. In 2000 Porter became deputy fashion editor for The Guardian, and since then, has worked as an associate editor for GQ and deputy editor for Fantastic Man. He currently writes for The Financial Times as their menswear critic, in addition to his freelance work, DJ-ing and maintaining an active blogging presence online. Porter is particularly known for his understanding of contemporary menswear and familiarity with developing streetwear and alternative trends.

At the time of the donation, Porter provided commentary on many of the pieces. He said of this piece:

"Tailored trousers/jersey top with leather shoulders – these are from Hedi Slimane’s first ever collection for Dior Homme, bought from the then just-opened Dior Homme boutique to the side of the Dior store on Avenue Montaigne. I had just interviewed Hedi for The Guardian, one of my first ever big fashion stories, and was completely obsessed with the clothes. It’s amazing to see how far his aesthetic has travelled in the past 16 years. The skinny black tailoring was there at the beginning, but his style was also much more “fashion”, much more overtly designed. This top to me always seemed very Star Wars, very sci-fi. I loved how the trousers looked like a bin bag. I wore the top more than the trousers, though I wore them often too."
