According to the Stratford-upon-Avon Annual Souvenir, 1934, Dorothy Black's biography states:

'Born in South Africa. Won the Gold Medal at the Central School of Dramatic Art and appeared in the Chorus of Electra at the Old Memorial Theatre in 1924. Played "Ann" in Outward Bound under Stanley Lathbury's management ; toured with Sybil Thorndike in Greek tragedy and was lead in the original tour of The Farmer's Wife. Two seasons at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre followed and she afterwards first appeared in London under Sir Barry Jackson's management.

Recent productions in London include Dear Brutus with Sir Gerald du Maurier, Rose without a Thorn, and The Brontës, in which part she won a big personal success as Emily Brontë.

She adapted V. Sackville West's Edwardians for the stage and is now at work on an original play.

This, her first season at Stratford, is her first engagement for Shakespeare.'
