Fredun Shapur is a toy designer and illustrator based in London. From the 1960s onwards, Shapur created innovative and distinctive design products for international companies such as Naef, Galt Toys, Fischerform and Selecta and especially for Creative Playthings. His work is remarkable for fostering children’s imagination through a wide range of playful learning opportunities that appeal to both children and adults. A strong visual language of flat planes and saturated colour united Shapur’s work across two and three dimensions.

'Little Learner' hammer toy, designed by Fredun Shapur, made by Playmaster, Sweden, 1988
Physical description
Round plastic transparent barrel, with a removable yellow lid. The lid has six holes shaped to fit the six plastic pegs. There are two each of white, blue and red pegs. The unvarnished wooden hammer has a large rounded head. There is an opening in the side of the barrel to allow children to reach in and retrieve the pegs once they are hammered through the holes. The box is red card with printed colour photographs of children using the toy.
