Europe and America 1815-1900, room 101 Book: ‘Voyages de Gulliver dans les Contrées Lointaines’ 1855 This French edition of Jonathan Swift’s celebrated novel shows Gulliver towering over the tiny inhabitants of Lilliput. The buckram cover is made of cotton and stiffened with starch. Hardwearing, cheap and quick to produce, cloth covers were an alternative to leather. They helped to satisfy the growing demand for books in the 19th century as levels of literacy increased. France, Paris; published by Pierre-Charles Lehuby; illustrated by Frédéric Bouchot; binding designs by Antoine Lenègre and Liebherre Cloth; panel stamped in gold and various colours Museum no.
