Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) is one of the world's best-loved children's authors and illustrators. She wrote the majority of the twenty-three Original Peter Rabbit Books between 1901 and 1913. The Tale of Peter Rabbit (Frederick Warne, 1902) is her most famous and best-loved tale.
Beatrix Potter visited Camfield Place in Hertfordshire, the country home of her paternal grandparents, regularly as a girl and young woman. Writing in her journal she called it ‘the place I love best in the world’. Here, she has captured the view from the drawing room window. The lush greens of the fields and trees in this scene suggest it was made during a summer visit. In contrast, another watercolour made from Camfield Place in the collection (BP.300) shows a view from the house seen in mist.
