Historical significance: A similar composition, Mont St Michel, Peasants returning to Pontorson of 1840, was sold at Christie's (London) on 6/12/2002, lot 39. In this painting a horse-drawn cart appears on the left, and the light effects suggest an evening scene. It is also significantly larger than the V&A's painting, measuring 105.1 x 142.9cm.
