Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) is one of the world's best-loved children's authors and illustrators. She wrote the majority of the twenty-three Original Peter Rabbit Books between 1901 and 1913. The Tale of Peter Rabbit (Frederick Warne, 1902) is her most famous and best-loved tale.

Before her marriage in 1913, Beatrix Potter accompanied her family to Scotland, Wales or the Lake District for holidays. This sheet is dated 18th May 1912, when Potter is thought to have been staying in Gwaynynog, in Denbighshire in Wales. Gwaynynog was the home of her aunt and uncle and she visited it regularly from 1903 until her marriage ten years later.

A sheet with a central horizontal fold line with a landscape format drawing of parkland dominated by a tree in the middle-ground (upper) and a portrait format drawing of a pathway through trees (lower). There is a small rough sketch of a fence on the verso (lower right).

Acquired by the V&A from Leslie Linder (1904-1973) in 1973 as part of the Linder Bequest, a collection of ca. 2150 watercolours, drawings, literary manuscripts, correspondence, books, photographs, and other memorabilia associated with Beatrix Potter and her family.
