Contained Box - Pale Yellow and Black

Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Andrea Walsh (b.1974) studied Fine Art at Staffordshire University before completing her MA in Glass at Edinburgh College of Art. She has since incorporated ceramics into her practice, exploring the complimentary qualities of fine bone china and glass. 'Contained Box' looks at ideas of containment, and a balance and layering of materials. Intimately scaled, the work evokes a sense of preciousness and value, with the translucent glass box inviting the viewer to investigate what lies within.

This piece was the first in a new collection of works that developed the theme of boxes and vessels within Walsh's work, and was exhibited at Collect Open 2015 in London. It marked a progression from Walsh's earlier delicate box forms with cast glass lids, of which the V&A holds two in its collection (C.127-2012 and C.128-2012).
