Historical context
Identical sleeves appear in the portrait attributed to George Gower of Mary Cornwallis in Manchester City Art Gallery. Did the two women use the same draughtsmen to draw out the embroidery design? Did one of them admire the other's sleeves and ask if she might copy them? Or did George Gower or one of his assistants use the detailed designs of the embroidery from the portrait of Mary Cornwallis, apparently the more skilfully painted picture of the two, for that of Frances Croker?
