Physical description

A gold nose ring, nath, with a gold wire loop of a roughly oval shape which is hooked into the eye made from the twisted wire at the opposite end. The decorative portion of the ring has two granulated motifs, one in a tear-drop shape and the other in the form of a circular disc, embellished with flat colourless glass insets. The motifs are soldered onto a flat beaten part of the ring which has been fashioned into a hook at the end to link up with a short length of gold wire which is threaded with a cluster of gold beads and a flat red glass bead with an additional couple of red and green drop glass beads suspended from it. Small sections of coiled gold wire have been wrapped round the ring at each end of the ornamentation with that on the right hand side being further decorated with a central section, some 2mm in length, of the thin gold wire wrapped round the core wire in a concertina loop.

Object history note

Dr Ganguly bought this nose ring from Th. Narbe in February 2005. She believed that the nose ring may have been adapted by being lengthened to be worn as a single ear ring. The construction however, is the same as that of Prov.756-2015, which she accepts as intended as a nose ring in this form.

Historical context note

Dr Ganguly records that small naths of this type are worn in the area from Ajmer to Nagaur.

Descriptive line
