Circle of Bartholomäus Bruyn (1493–1555)

The carnation, a symbol of betrothal,
indicates that this portrait was probably
made on the occasion of a wedding. The
sitter wears a ring inscribed with the initials
SH in reverse but his identity remains
unknown. The artist, Bartholomäus Bruyn,
worked in the closely observed, realistic
style that had developed in the Southern
Netherlands in the early 15th century.
