This fine quality silk fringe would have been used to trim furniture. Such fringes could be used by themselves for simple effect, or made up in different widths to make complex decorative schemes. The Melville bed in the V&A's collection (W.35-1949) has eight different types of red silk fringe, arranged in patterns specific to different parts of the bedhangings.
