Charles Dickens' third Christmas novel, The Cricket on the Hearth, about the Peerybingle family and the chirruping cricket that protected them, was a great success when it was published by Bradbury and Evans and released on 20th December 1845. Like all Dickens' Christmas novels it had not been previously serialised in a magazine, so Edward Stirling's feat of writing an adaptation, and the speed of mounting and staging the production for its opening at the Adelphi Theatre on 31st December 1845, was remarkable.
Dickens' works were so popular that theatres vied with each other to produce pirated versions of them as soon as they could. The only authorised adaptation, by Albert Smith, was produced by Mr. and Mrs. Keeley at Lyceum Theatre on 26th December 1845, but Dickens had made his proofs available to Albert Smith in advance of publication for that adaptation
