This is an embroidered robe, made for a woman. The embroidery is made on gauze, and this type of robe is worn during the summer months as it is lighter and cooler.

The embroidery technique adopted is similar with cross-stitch, except the embroidery threads pass through the fine weaves of a gauze in even horizontal or vertical stitches.

Physical description
Manchu woman's outer gown (changyi), made of sea green gauze-weave silk, embroidered in coloured silks with sprays of gourds and flowers on the main body. The borders are edged with bats and floral designs embroidered in shades of blue, and applied gold ribbon. The garment features a round neckline, long sleeves, right overlap fastening and side-slits. Fastened with four openwork gilt brass buttons.
